What Home Improvement Reality TV Shows Don’t Tell You

As most viewers,  you’ve likely watched some sort of Home Improvement Reality TV show. Everyone has their favorites. I can bet that as you sat there, tuned into the process of the renovation project, and though, “I can do that!” OR “Wouldn’t it be great to have that same style in my home?

They make it look easy, don’t they?

What you don’t know is there’s more to these shows than the eyes can see. The reality is, behind the scenes of Reality Home Improvement TV Shows, aren’t as real as it seems. Here are few things to keep in mind:

Remodeling timeframes are often rushed.
Large project get finished quickly on TV, but we don’t see all of the hustle and bustle that goes on behind the scenes. “There’s this illusion of a design being done at the push of a button, as if I’ve done it instantaneously, which is not possible,” said Rick McAlexander, CEO of Associated Designs Inc.

It takes hours, weeks, and even months to put all those ideas onto paper. High-tech graphics are cool, but even all the data needed to input into the computer to make those graphics is complex and time-consuming, not to mention costly.” Up to 30 people could be working around the clock to get the project finished on time, and products are often chosen based on the crunch time, not quality.

Budgets aren’t realistic.
Advertisers provide free materials, and contractors often work at discounted rates in exchange for free publicity. On TV, suppliers get special consideration with an understanding that they will also get promotional exposure by virtue of their products being used on the show. The costs, therefore, are downgraded to little or nothing.

The budgets on TV are truly a joke because they are not reflective of actual renovation costs. The true cost of materials, design elements, fixtures, and those high-tech graphics, can be expensive. Remember you get what you pay for so every little detail counts.
